AI in Education & Practical Insights for School Staff with Dr Leon Fruze
What if AI isn't something to fear or blindly embrace, but something we need to better understand?
Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the way we teach, learn and work. For many educators, that brings excitement, uncertainty and plenty of questions. How does AI actually work? What are its limitations? How can we use it thoughtfully without losing sight of what matters most in education?
In this conversation with educator, author and AI specialist Dr Leon Furze, we explore the opportunities, challenges and ethical considerations of AI in education, and what every educator needs to know as this technology continues to evolve.
Together, we unpack how AI actually works, why it isn't simply an advanced search engine, and how it has the potential to reduce workload, improve accessibility and support more inclusive classrooms. We also discuss the ethical considerations, the importance of professional judgement, and why schools need clear conversations around privacy, student use and responsible implementation.
One of the things I loved most about this conversation is that Leon doesn't encourage us to either reject AI or rush to adopt every new tool. Instead, he invites us to become curious, experiment thoughtfully and remember that technology should always serve education, not the other way around.
If you've ever felt excited, cautious or simply overwhelmed by AI, I think you'll really enjoy this conversation.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
How AI actually works and what large language models do.
The limitations, risks and ethical considerations of AI.
How AI can support inclusion and assistive technology for diverse learners.
Practical ways educators can become more confident and skilled using AI.
What the future of AI in education may look like.
And so much more...
Who is Dr Leon Furze?
Dr Leon Furze is an educator, consultant, speaker and one of Australia's leading voices on artificial intelligence in education. He works with schools, education systems and organisations across Australia, helping educators understand how AI is reshaping teaching, learning and leadership.
Leon is the author of several books, including Practical AI Strategies 2: The Critical Guide to GenAI in Education, where he provides practical guidance for educators wanting to use AI thoughtfully, ethically and effectively.
Why does this conversation matter?
AI is no longer a future conversation. It's already here. Every day, educators are making decisions about how to use it, how to respond to student use, and how to prepare young people for a world where AI will become increasingly embedded in everyday life.
This conversation matters because Leon reminds us that understanding AI isn't about becoming a technology expert. It's about becoming an informed educator. Rather than focusing on the latest tools, he encourages us to understand the capabilities, limitations and ethical implications of AI so we can make thoughtful decisions that benefit students and school communities.
Most importantly, he reminds us that while technology will continue to evolve, the heart of education remains unchanged. Relationships, curiosity, professional judgement and human connection will always be at the centre of great teaching.
You can quote us on that…

"When you put in good accessibility features for one group of people, it improves the conditions for everyone."
